Note the dents at the root of the horizontal stabiliser, as well as the dents on the left side of the fuselage. 2. Note the uncommon shape of the rudder. It seems to be more triangular than usual. The Trimmer seems to be sitting lower and the rear light is missing. This is quite strange and unless the photo reference used for this was photoshopped incorrectly by someone, I am not sure how to explain the slightly deformed tail of this MiG-3. More on this in the Closeup images below. 3. Brush strokes seem to be visible on what must have been a roughly brush painted digit of the tactical number. 4. Seems to be fitted with an inert gas pipe. 5. Looking closely at the photo reference it looks like 'White-1' had a rocket attachment. It's just poking out from under the wing in the reference. 6. Note the unusual rectangle at the base of the wing. Probably a section that's been previously touched up with black paint, or possibly a section of a wing from another MiG. 7. 'Редукция 0732’ (Reduction 0732), specifies the reduction in the engine gear ratio, as can be seen on some 'Late Type' MiG-3s. 8. Retractible tailwheel. The shape of the doors is that of the early type's doors , they have a rectangular cutout in them for the tailwheel. 9. No radio transmitter is visible. 'White-1' was probably only equipped with a receiver. 10. Late type MiG, with slats. 11. Note that the shape of the star on the right side of the fuselage is not perfectly symmetrical. This striking looking plane looks to be freshly painted in the photo reference. The stars are in the usual 6 positions. The airplane is adorned with two large red arrows on each side of the fuselage - a decorative element, these arrows are not associated with identification markings of any particular unit. The shade of red colour of the arrows and the spinner seems to differ slightly from the red of the stars and differs very slightly from plane to plane in the photo of the three of them. This could be simply because of the bad quality of the photograph. Having been gifted by an ‘Aircraft repair plant’ it is possible that these were not brand new airplanes, but refurbished machines, possibly veterans of the ‘Battle for Moscow’. Regardless of whether this was the case or not, there is a high probability that these were some of the last MiG-3s to be built, in which case they were probably equipped with only 2 machine guns. About 315 (or 350 according to other sources)late production MiG-3s were armed with 2 x 12.7mm caliber UBS machine guns, with ammunition increased from 300 to 700 rounds each. 215 of them were equipped with 2 x RO-82 rail launchers for firing RS-82 rockets, same as can be seen in the photos of “Za patriyu bol’shevikov” About 30 (or 50 according to other sources) late production MiG-3s were armed with 2x 20mm caliber ShVAK cannons instead. [2] As far as the external appearances go, the 2-gun version of the airplane probably looked the same externally as the 3-gun version, it just lacked the extra gun which fired through the middle slot, but it’s likely that the middle (external) slot was still present. 1. The vertical red lines (on both sides of the plane) under the horizontal stabilisers indicate the area for lifting plane’s tail during repairs. 2. ‘За партию большевиков’ (Za partiyu bol’shevikov), translates to ‘For the Bolshevik Party’ . 3. Note that no radio is visible inside the airplane. Perhaps the radio equipment is set deeper than usual and that’s why we can’t see it? We know that, unlike the other two airplanes in the photograph, “Za partiyu bol’shevikov” was indeed equipped with a radio. Rybalko mentioned that in his interview and also we can clearly see the presence of the antena mast and wires in the photographs. However, strangely enough, the radio is not visible in the photo of the three airplanes, nor in the photo of “Za partiyu bol’shevikov” from spring 1942. To make the mystery more interesting it looks like the radio box IS visible in another photo from the ceremony! :) 4. The plane was equipped with the RO-82 rail launchers. The RS-82 rockets were not loaded onto the launchers during the gifting ceremony, nor are they visible in the photo from spring 1942, therefore I didn’t include them in the illustration above. 5. Please Note! The presence of the inert gas pipe on this airplane is hypothetical. We have photos showing that the inert gas pipe was present on “Za Stalina.” but wasn’t present on “Za rodinu”. There were no photos of “Za partiyu bol’shevikov” showing this same part of the airplane, so based on the photos of the other two planes the likelihood of the presence/absence of the inert gas pipe on “Za partiyu bol’shevikov” is 50-50. 6. The metal frame of the canopy was probably unpainted, except for the lower strip. It appears to be darker than white as shown by ‘6a’ and lighter than green/black as shown by ‘6b’ . 7. Note the non-retractable tailwheel. The base of the wheel shaft is protected with a canvas or leather covering. 8. This was a late type MiG-3, with slats. 9. The white paint that the plane was painted with might not have been MK-7 temporary/removable white paint, but a more permanent version of white paint instead. This rationale is based on the fact that in the ‘summer livery’ version of this airplane the red lines indicated by ‘11’ in the diagram seem to have been painted over. This would be more likely if the plane was repainted with green/black over the top of the original white and red, as opposed to the temporary MK-7 white and red being painted over the original green/black and then rubbed off to reveal the original green/black underneath it. 10. The stars on underside of the wings might have been quite large. As per '“Za rodinu.” The plane as it might have looked in spring of 1943. General. The plane looks like it was painted over with AMT-4 (Dark Green) and AMT-6 (Black). Though the quality of the photograph is quite poor, it doesn’t seem to show any obvious signs of paint chipping/weathering, suggesting that the new paint work hasn’t had much time to age yet. 12. Note that the red line has been painted over and that some of the (AMT-4 green) paint might have been brushed over some the AMT-7 light blue just under the horizontal stabiliser. 13. The large red arrow might still have been faintly visible under the new coat of paint since there seems to be a hint of it visible in the photo reference. 14. Please Note! The camouflage pattern on the nose of this airplane indicated by ‘14b’ is hypothetical. The antenna mast, indicated by ‘14a’ looks like it was painted black, which serves as one clue is one clue as to what the camo pattern might have looked like. I should add the same disclaimer about the camouflage pattern on the upper surface of the right wing and the right horizontal stabilizer - these areas are my best “educated guess” as to what they might have looked like. 2. The photos seem to show a hint of streaks or spills of some sort on the fuselage in front of the canopy. Although it is very difficult to tell from the photos, if we will look hard enough at this particular photo reference HERE , then it appears that there is the slightest hint of a dark shape where the radio transmitter should be, indicating that this plane was probably equipped with the radio transmitter/receiver. The fact that ‘White-67’ seems to be “leading” the group of MiGs is another clue to the possibility that it was equipped with a radio receiver/transmitter to be able to give commands and communicate with others. 4. In most of the photos of this plane it is very difficult to see the camouflage pattern on the tail because the tail appears to be so dark, as I am sure you will agree. The only photo reference which gives us the best hint for the tail’s camo pattern is the bottom photo in the link posted above. Here it is again HERE . Zooming in on the tail in this photo gives us the best hint of what the camo pattern there looks like. My artwork shows how I have interpreted the camouflage from the photo reference, a comparison is shown in the close-up further down the page. 5. The tailwheel didn't retract in flight. 6. Note that the tailwheel is down in the illustration. In the photo linked above all the airplanes have their tailwheels down. At first one might suppose that their tailwheels were the non-retractible type, but we know that at least one of the planes (White-12) had the tailwheel doors present, as can be seen in THIS PHOTO, suggesting that it was most likely a retractible tail wheel after all, or at least that the tailwheel doors were present on it and therefore probably on White-23 also. Perhaps the reason the tailwheels appear in the ‘down’ position in the photo of the flying airplanes is because the planes just took off? Above is the study I used to help me figure out the camo. pattern which was rather non-standard on most La-5s of the 1. čsslp. Though there are some discrepancies about Heller’s exact number of victories, it appears that the 12 markings in this early paint scheme represented Heller’s 4.5 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air and 7.5 on the ground, all of which occurred before Heller began flying this airplane. It’s worth noting the following features: 1) There were 18 victory markings painted on the airplane at this time (each represented by a black swastika inside a red circle ), these were displayed in three rows of six. They were presumably Carson’s 14.5 aerial victories plus 3.5 strafing kills, all scored while flying his previous airplanes. 2) The presence of the D-Day stripes. What is quite interesting about these is that the black/white pattern is inverted which is quite unique - the white stripes appear in place of the black stripes and vice versa. There were probably no recognition stripes painted on the wings and horizontal stabilisers. 3) Although this plane was made at the Dallas plant it seems to be fitted with an Englewood plant’s canopy hood. She was a paramedic (rank of lieutenant ). From a small village near Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine, she joined the army in 1941 (the year USSR joined the fight against Hitler), made it all the way to Berlin in 1945 and signed her name on the wall of the Reichstag as a victor, along with many other battle-weary but happy Soviet soldiers. She was shot through the leg during the war and received many medals for her service, including a medal for the final battle - "the Battle for Berlin". God only knows what horrors she saw during the 4 years as a paramedic at the Eastern Front of WW2 - the bloodiest front in Europe. When she came back home from the war, she was not greeted by a warm welcome from her mother and two little brothers. What we do know about it is the following: 1) The M-82 engine, along with the entire engine cowling “shell” (and possibly the propeller spinner?) was taken from a Su-4 airplane and grafted on to the latest series production LaGG-3 body. 2) The oil cooler was attached to the bottom of the plane between fuselage frames 4 and 5, the space which previously contained the coolant radiator fairing. 3) Two prototypes were built. The first was to be armed with 2 synchronised BS machine guns, and 2 synchronised ShKAS guns. The prototype however didn’t have the ShKAS guns installed, and BS guns, although installed, had no barrels. The second prototype was to feature 2 ShVAK cannons in place of the BS guns and 2 BS guns in place of the ShKAS guns. I did include the barrel holes on top of the engine cowling in the drawing above, but there is a chance that these did not exist on the prototype. The prototype was modified in a number of ways during the tests, some of these changed the airplane's outer appearance: 1) The ‘non retractible’ tailwheel marked by ‘1a’ was replaced with a retractible one marked by ‘1b’. 2) The oil cooler was changed to a larger OP-293 oil cooler. 3) The carburator airline was moved to the top of the engine cowl and the air intake on top of the cowl appeared.
